A Day In The Life Of An Upcoming Internet Entrepreneur with a Day Job

In response to Yaro's A Day In The Life Of An Internet Entrepreneur 2009 Edition I decided to write about my experience as an Upcoming Internet Entrepreneur with a Day Job. I always dream to have similar online income to Yaro's, John Chow, Grizzly and others, however I guess you could say I am in between, up and coming.

Little things about me
I don't have many readers on my blog (partly I never intended my blog to be public), so here is a quick introduction about myself and my situation. I am currently 31 years old and live in Sydney Australia, however I grew up in Brisbane. I have a bachelor of IT major in Computer Science from QUT (Queensland University of Technology)..

I am currently engaged to a wonderful girl. I have been fortunate she supports me in many ways that allows me to concentrate on my online business when I am not at work.

I currently work full time as a Manager of a Financial company in Sydney. My goal in life is Financial freedom and to have my own online business. Financial freedom through investing in property, which I been fortunate to done quite well in it at the moment.

History
I started making money online in May 2005 about 50$ a month which was exciting at the time. The idea of having website stem the idea of Passive Income through property. I saw that having a website is like a property that makes money whether you are there or not really is my motivation.

A website is very similar to a property, people are willing to pay you rent to have the privilege to live in it and advertisers pay me rent to advertise on my web site. Which is fantastic value. Every month I receive a cheque from them and every month Google sends me one. Beautiful

However through combination of lack of motivation and forward vision, the site only grew to 100$ a month in the last 2 years.

However over time it never really took off. May 2009 about 4 years later this is when my one site began to take off, like I making 500$ a month now but honestly I should be making more if wasn't so lazy.

Here is a typical day of Upcoming Internet Entrepreneur with a Day Job

Morning
I tend to wake up around 830-845 have a shower and rush out the door to be in at work around 900am - 915am. Sometimes I fit in a little breakfast but generally a coffee will spruce me up, I don't get 8 hours sleep usually 4-5 max if I am lucky.

As soon as I get into work I check my Google Adsense which has become a ritual. Also now I am check Ebay and other affiliate programs.

Officially my workday begins after that. I would read all my 100s of emails and begin to work through all the questions and management issues.

Lunch
I will take lunch around at 1pm and now make an effort to not sit at my desk and eat my lunch. I take an hour have a bit a social chit chat with the staff. Around 2pm my days continue with the usual. Do the same tasks until 6pm go home time.

I will then head to the gym and workout for about an hour and then go home to have dinner.

Evening
By now half the evening has already gone, I would spend the next 5 hours or so working on my online my business.

Create new pages
Moderate the website
Read and Procrastinate about how other people making money (This is the biggest time waster)
Goal setting - What I need to get done each day

Each of my sites I run, are full on websites not just a blog. The site is fully interactive and is setup to allow readers to contribute and be part of the community. I see each of my new sites not just a website with information but a website that can truely provide real value to my readers and not just to make me money. Some of my sites don't even make me money but eventually they will as I will grow them through time.

Conclusion
My hours are long and in honestly this it is tough. I actually quite drained from working 1 job that pays fairly well and the other that is unknown. But the brilliant bit about the second one, I don't always have to work on the website to make money. I do zero promotions, nearly 95% organic traffic which is amazing.

There is no short cut in making alot of money whether it is online or offline. Hardwork and lots of work.

Make Money with Ebay Affiliate Program

Last month I decided to join Ebay's Affiliate Program, mainly to try to squeeze a little more money out of my sites. I installed the script to my main site by researching my adsense revenue on pages that were not generating any revenue to see if they can be better monetized.

So far the program has amassed me a total of $1 dollar. This is not much, however I have only added it to 10 pages which is a very very small segment of my site.

The Ebay's Affiliate Program payout structure was originally based from sign-ups and successful bids, but last week they announced that are going change it to be Pay Per Click (Quality Click Pricing). Now this would be very interesting to see how it performs against Google's Adsense. I am not 100% convince this will make me more money than Adsense but it will help increase my ROI on non-performing pages.

Optimizing your advertising realestate is very important to ensure that you have the very best opportunity of making some money from your sites. I have been blindly using Adsense for over 5 years and only recently realize that only proportion of my sites page actually make money from Adsense and there are other pages that just eating bandwidth and not generating income.

100 Website Experiment
It has been really an exciting month for my 100 website experiment.

Some important statistics:
1. Highest paying day since joining Google Adsense
2. Highest paying month since joining Google Adsense
3. Highest traffic month

It is amazing how a few tweaks here and there can do wonders for a site. I am absolutely floored by the results however I am skeptical whether this will continue. I am hoping it will continue for the next 6 months. If it continues at this rate I should be well into my 100$ day within 6-9 months.

Sometimes you need to perfect and do something really and not half ass effort before trying to replicate. I think my biggest issues have been complacency and not spending the time on something that I should have kept at it. Also the mentality of thinking it will be easy was a big no no.

Conclusion
As you can see I am no longer going show much I made each month as it probably has been rather pointless.

It has been nearly 18 months since I started this experiment and I am no closer to that 100 websites or 100$ a day mark.

Things learnt so far.

1. Replication is not that simple. It takes more effort then just putting a site and hope it will make money. There are factors at play and need to be wary of them
- Competition
- Keywords
- Popularity

2. Competition is fierce. If you tackle a particular niche that is highly competitive you will most likely not do well unless you really know how to rank well in search engines and how to do SEO.

3. Marketing a site is important. Cannot just hope that a crawler will crawl your site. Especially if it is in a highly competitive niche.

From these lessons learnt, I will be taking a different approach in how to tackle this project and concentrate my efforts of dominating the SERP for one particular niche and then extend it to 10 niches.

If I can start making 50$ a day on this one site then I should be able to take to 100$ with new sites. Until I figured out how to dominate a niche then there is no use building multiple sites on different niches as it will be a waste of effort. Once I can perfect one then it should be possible to create more sites.

The Secret to Making Money Online

After years of searching and reading other blogs, websites and reading every ebook available I finally found the "Secret of Making Money Online".

After applying the "Secret" my world changed, my income just multiplied and now I am well on my way of making my riches online.

With the "Secret of Making Money Online" in hand, I started to build websites.

I then proceeded to apply for Google Adsense and other revenue programs to generate income from.

For each of the sites I wrote quality article and content using SEO friendly terms, headings and titles. New articles was updated on a added regularly.

I promoted these websites using different techniques from Adwords, organic traffic through SEO and linking to places which complimented my sites.

I also setup Google Analytics to track keywords, traffic and revenues. With this information in hand I was able to analyze everything. This was valuable information.

It was hard at first, but over time the money just started to roll in, literally every morning I would wake to see massive balance in each of my revenue reports.

If you are still reading this then you probably dying to find out what my "Secret of Making Money Online". If you read the post again, the secret is "I started". Thats right, you can read all you want but if you never start you will never succeed. Interest Rates Cuts

Today the Australian Reserve Bank announced they will cut interest rates by a whole 1%.

This is the first time I have ever seen interest rates this low in my life. I guess my thoughts on this is both positive and negative. Positive in the sense I will be paying less interest each month. The increase of my cash flow is also good, meaning less of personal money is used to sustain these investments.

However negative in terms this will make housing more affordable and rentals less attractive.

However as an property investor it also gives me more reasons to re-enter the market to buy another property. Prices are relatively low and to service the loans are now even more affordable.

So this year my main goal is to find another investment property.

Cost of Owning Property

Have you ever wondered the costs of actually owning a property? Here the major costs that I incurr on my properties.

Finance - This include any interests and fees that is incurred with a financial institution to finance the purchase.
Council Rates
Body Corporate (Strata Properties)
Management Fees - I currently have property managers looking after and handling any issues relating to the management of the property. Generally they can cost between 7-8% of the total rental.
Repairs - Generally there will be small repairs that is required to be upkeep and maintain the property each year.
Inspection Fees

As my properties are investments all the above costs and expenses are tax deductible, which helps soften the blow of owning an investment property.

All the above annual expenses should always be part of your budget and plans when you purchase a property. You may be able to afford this today but can you afford it next year or next month. So careful planning is necessary.

However as you pay off debt, and combination of capital growth and rental return, property is well worth the investment.

SoftSys Hosting Review

Well after months of searching and researching I have decided to go with SoftSys Hosting.

I have registered with their Silver Shared package which gives you
- 2 Hosted domains
- ASP.NET
- MSSQL/MYSQL
- Heaps of other stuff
- 70$ Annually

After signing up and making payment, I instantly received an email regarding all the configuration. So I promptly uploaded my site, database schemas and application. My first impression of the product it is pretty good value for money for what been offered.

Issues
However I had some issues in regards to their MYSQL 5.0. All of my pages was loading extremely slow. After raising a ticket, their suggestion was try Microsoft SQL Server. So little flusted and annoyed about this, I decided to migrate my DB to MSSQL. Took a few hours of rewriting schemas and reworking my base code to handle the new database.

I had my fingers crossed, hoping that all my work was not in vain, I tried it again and pages loaded up really fast, fantastic. I was relieved, cause I didnt want to go find another host and do all the leg work again.

Positives
There technical Support has been brilliant. They were prompt and polite in resolving my issues. I had to admit though, at one stage I was about to ask for a refund cause I could not connect to my website, but after a few emails we finally manage to figure out the issue, and they promptly fixed it (DNS misconfiguration on their end) and everything appears to working fine.

One of the things I like about SoftSys Hosting, is there control panel. I love DotNetPanel, it is an amazing application providing everything I need to do via one interface.

Summary
For the price I am paying is very reasonable, hopefully they will stay good, so I can start implementing my 100 website experiment.

Kontera - Disabled

Just short of 30 days I have decided to disabled Kontera from my sites. It did generate some revenue, but frankly it didn't create anywhere near the revenue Google Adsense provides. In some ways it was probably detrimental to my earnings. Not sure any relationship but my entire revenue for the last 10 days has been very bad.

The eCPM is $1.21 compare to $22+ Google Adsense which is just unacceptable for the type and quality of my traffic.

However there is lots happening with the Financial crisis but even the expected revenue generated was amazing low.

I have not removed them permanently but at this stage they are disabled from my application until I can justify putting them back on.

I finally took the plunge and added Kontera to my websites. I have always relied on Google Adsense. However in recent times with the fluctuating of revenue I does make sense to perhaps try another advertiser in hope to increase my revenue.

Many people say if you do not diversify than you headed into trouble waters, I don't particularly agree with this. If you look at all the great entrepreneurs in the world, most get rich with one particular asset class. Look at Donald Trump he made his fortunes with Property, Warren Buffet shares and Bill Gates - Microsoft. I think people tell you to diversify to be safe, but sometimes concentrating all your efforts into one thing may potentially pay dividends.

I will let this trial to run for about 30 days and see if revenue has decrease or increase with Kontera.

Money Making Experiment - Property

I thought it was about time I added to my list of Money Making Experiments my Property portfolio.

I started investing into property when I was just 21, however only recently have I actively seek to increase the number of properties in my portfolio. In the beginning I thought it was a burden and constantly worried about it. Also it didnt help when all my friends were telling me that I was crazy, you have a ball and chain and you won't get to travel. Well how wrong were they, I have traveled the world, I have traveled on 4 continents America, Europe, Asia and Australsia, because I learnt how to save money.

I currently own two properties in my home town of Brisbane (Living in Sydney, Australia). Owning property has given me more than profits, it has taught me how to save money, budget, management, negotiation skills and financial IQ.

Goal
Build a property portfolio to produce passive income of over 100K a year through rentals.

Short Term Goal

To acquire a 3rd Property in 2009.

PureProfile is the second program I have been with for a number of years. Similar to Emailcash I have earned about 385$. The best thing the money is deposited into my bank account which is fantastic.

The way you earn is doing surveys and viewing ads. Generally the surveys are worth anything from 20cents - 5$. You have to login all the time to see if you receive any surveys which is slightly annoying but much easier to earn than Emailcash.

However you must earn a minimum of 25$ before you can cash out.

I have been a member of Emailcash since the Year 2000. Wow amazing nearly 8 years. Over the 8 years I have probably cashed out about 6 times (180$) that makes it nearly once year.

Emailcash has a a variety of ways for you to earn money through filling out surveys, clicking on advertising, shopping through reward partners, banking the points to earn interest, daily competition and reading emails.

You can use your points to spend on gifts, give it to charity or cash out a 30$ check.

You can make 5cents a day by doing there daily survey and click on an ad. Which equates to about 1.50$ a month. I have used there shopping reward partner once but generally I get most of my points from surveys and emails and daily clicks.

To be honest, Emailcash is probably one of the slowest way to earn free money online, as it can take over 12 months to cash out unless you are spending money. I don't know why I still do it, but perhaps out of habit. However Emailcash has always paid me on time without fail which is fantastic.

There are plenty of places on the internet to get free money these days. However if you think about it, it is not really free money, you usually have to read or fill in something in exchange for cash or a reward.

I have been doing this for a number of years now starting from the craze of All Advantage to collecting Beenz. However in the last 3-4 years I have settled with 2 programs which has consistently paid me.

Outsourcing to India

After reading the "4 Hour Work Week" by Timothy Ferris, guess what? I've been sent to India to "volunteer" to lead in our fact finding/ information transfer outsourcing project. Well it has been a week since I have been back from India and I am glad to be back home.

India is definitely an eye opening experience, personally I wouldn't go their to work but in terms of outsourcing it is amazing.

Having over 800-1000 resources at your disposal at any time. Having developers of all facets of the development cycle which are highly skilled and most of all "cheap".

Personally I think outsourcing is the way to go. From a business point of view it makes sense, we can cut cost by 60-70% by what we could get locally. We can add resources when required without costing us a fortune. But most of all it can free up our local staff from doing menial tasks and into more productive tasks.

As you know I have been working (NOT) on 100 Website experiments for over 7 months and haven't even started on my second website which absolutely slack of me. I have the ideas but not enough of my time is dedicated to it.

So I am currently exploring perhaps an opportunity to outsource some of my tasks. However I am tossing between doing it myself until I have built enough websites that can sustain an outsourcing partner or should I bite the bullet?

What to do...what a dilemma? Anyone have had similar experiences, love to hear from you?

I have decided to end my Money Making Experiment - Playing Poker. It was fun while it lasted but sometimes you know when it is time to move on. I realise that Poker did not really fit in with my life aspirations and goals.

Can you make money playing poker? I guess the answer is Yes but if you looking for it to support your lifestyle then it is not easy.

The game can often be very time consuming. Often it can lead to hours of play and result in very little gain or nothing. It is physically exhausting. You need to be mentally, physically and emotionally strong in this game. I have to admit it was hard work...it wasn't easy money as some would like to think.

I made more money in doing nothing on my websites then playing 8 hours of poker. So the obvious decision was to start concentrating and working on my other experiments.

I am quite happy with it generally, I started the experiment with 10$ and finished up with 53$. making that 530% return on my money. Not bad for an amateur.

Website Experiment Update

Where do I start. It has been a miserable month for my websites. Google income cut by 60%, which is quite amazing. Not exactly sure what happen but something happen and has dropped my rankings on terms I have ranked well for years.

This new fluctuation has taken a slight toll on my motivation. I rely solely on organic traffic which does not appear to be a viable option anymore.

However it is about time I find other ways to convert my Traffic with other type revenue producing programs.

Money Making Experiment - Playing Poker

I have decided to put some flair and gusto in my life and play poker. I have probably been playing poker for about a year now. So I guess you can call me an amateur. I find it exciting, thrilling and fun. Can I make a living in poker? Who knows right? Probably not but perhaps I can be good enough to make some spare cash on the side.

Poker is like a sport to me, you have to be both physically and mentally fit. You have to study it and practice it.

Goal
The goal of this experiment is to become a good poker player.

Success Indicator
The success indicator is pretty obvious, I win more than I lose.

New Job

In about 2 weeks time I will be starting a new job. This job was kind of surprise but a good surprise. I wasn't looking for a new job but one day just before Christmas they gave me a call, had a quick chat and two days later contracts were signed.

However many people gave me advise to not take the job for a variety reasons and lots of negativity. They place alot of doubt on my mind. But in the end I realise you have to follow your heart cause I saw the potential that they did not.

I saw the potential to build my career and ultimately to learn new skills. Jim Rohn said in one of his seminars to invest in yourself and you will become more wealthy. That is exactly what I am doing, by taking this job I am investing in my self.

As mention in my previous post How many vehicles do you have? my job is one of my primary money vehicles. So it makes sense to invest into my job.

Investing in yourself is as important as investing your money. Learn and Grow.

Ps. I am off to Nice France for work.

How many vehicles do you have?

When I said how many vehicles, I don't mean cars well if you are wondering I drive a Subaru RX, I mean how many different types of money makers. I have about 7 main vehicles

My Job
Property Investment
Shares
Savings
Superannuation - Retirement Fund (Government force upon)
Money Making Experiments
Knowledge

However four out of seven make me money passively. So why do I have so many different vehicles? Well the main reason is if I lost my job tomorrow or the share market died I still have others working for me.

However please note, I am diversify but my money is not spread evenly across each vehicle. It depends on what you fancy more. I have favour some over others because mainly due to point seven. My knowledge is stronger in some than others.

I have knowledge at Seven because without knowledge you cannot do anything. So continue to increase your knowledge cause it will be the most valuable thing you ever invested into. Only through knowledge can you become wiser in how the Financial World works. Everyone have a story, learn from their mistakes, so you don't have to go through it.

Finding Money

This weekend at a casino in Sydney I was watching the Asia Pacific Poker Tournament and during the breaks I was wandering around the pokie machines and found 1$ on the ground. I was so excited (not really) but hey 100% profit for simply bending down to pick it up is pretty cool, especially been a non gambler.

So I decided to do another experiment to see how much money can be found at the casino. That night I found a total of 11$ on the ground and in poker machines people have left in the slot.

The saddest thing, most people who play these machines are already set to lose. Money literally dropping out of their pockets.

The operators of these places really know what they are doing. The odds are really really stacked up against you when there is alcohol, poor lighting and a relaxing environment which make you lose money even faster.

I felt bad taking these people's money but I am a opportunist, I take things when they are presented to me. Many people don't realise this until it is too late.

The most important lesson here make sure you are in control of yourself before giving your hard earn money to anything whether it is an investment, to someone or something. Make sure you know what you are doing.

What is Financial Freedom?

What does financial freedom mean to you? For me personally I would loosely defined it as been able to spend money freely without having to worry about tomorrow. Why I ask this question is because many people dream of financial freedom or talk about it but never know when they get there. How can your dreams come true when you don't even know what it is.

Originally I thought financial freedom for me was enough to survive. I was concentrating all of my efforts to making 30K a year passively. Then I started thinking and realise that the dream I was aiming for was infact a false dream. It was a dream to survive, so it meant I couldn't buy cool things, travel the world, buy cars or spend it on my girlfriend or even start family. Who was gonna feed kids?

Perhaps that was my dream back in 2003 but not to realise this sooner have cost me precious time.

I recommend you to start thinking what does financial freedom mean to you? Everyones dream is different, but make sure you evaluate from time to time that you are on the same page with yourself. Otherwise, you never get to where you going. And worse of all time is wasted. I hate time wasters.

Money Making Experiment - 100 Websites

About 2 years ago I created my first passive incoming producing website. Over the years it has consistently made me money for doing little or no work. I know that this website alone makes me over 1$ a day, so I always wondered will 100 websites make me 100$ a day.

Thats over 36500$ per year.

Goal
The goal of this experiment is to make 100$ a day through 100 websites.

Success Indicator
To make 100$ a day passively through these websites will be the main indicator of success.

Rules

Each website must be developed using "White Hat SEO" Techniques.
Can be monetized with Paid Per Click, Advertising, Affiliate Marketing and Pay to Blogging.
Each website must be created using Free Blogs or be a Hosted solution.

Financial Freedom Diary

I first started writing into my Financial Freedom Diary when I was 25. This diary basically provided a summary of my financial state at different times of my life. It is nothing flash, it just a 80 page exercise book. But it has been one of the most important things I ever done in my life. I have exactly 10 entries in it. The first entry was dated 21st July 2003.

I would write into this diary to show any major changes in my finances. This would include every time I got a raise, change jobs or bought something big. It is amazing to see my personal journey from what it was 4 years go. I have watched myself from been unemployed to having nothing to living the life of my dreams.

How many of you know how much you are worth? How much money you can afford to invest? How much debt you are in? How much have you saved in the last 12months? All these facts and figures has helped me in putting my dreams of financial freedom into motion. Without my diary I do not think I be where I am today. Still a long way to go but at least I can see I am heading in the right direction.

I truely recommend people to write or have a diary just to remind, reflect and learn from your financial journeys.
